The Skin of My Culture

The Skin of My Culture (2019) is a self-portrait series on the perception of beauty and appearance in East/Southeast Asian societal standards. Common practice from all genders is to seek out aesthetically pleasing visuals with the aid of skincare and body alterations. This includes dieting, having plastic surgery, putting on filters, and using beauty tools to manipulate physical features. Combined influence of popular culture, traditional conservative beliefs, and the emphasis of attractive physical appearance for career advancements erupts a self-conscious collision for youths.
